Hagoromo is a project about the suburbs, the night, and the palace on the moon. It is a short film based on the nō play of the same name, which tells the story of a celestial maiden who descends to earth and must beg a fisherman to return her robe to her so she can fly back to the moon. In exchange she dances for him and describes the Moon Palace. This film layers images of a suburban landscape with text drawn from the nō play and field recordings. As night falls on the suburbs, they are transformed into another world, much as Whistler writes of nightfall transforming industrial London, recorded in his nocturnes.
